There is a access plate on the left side of the trunk floor. Remove that little plate and
then remove the wire going to the gas gauge sender. With the ignition switch on,
ground the wire, and the gas gauge should go to full. Then you will know if the gauge
is working or not.

To check the float, remove the sender unit from the tank, and with the sender wire
hooked up, and attatch a ground wire from sender to a good clean spot on the trunk
floor, and with switch on, move the float slowly up, and see if the gauge moves up,
this may take a few seconds before needle moves.....good luck

I didn't have any luck with the drake replacement sending unit. But had a good friend who welded the drake rod and float onto my orginial sending unit and now it works great.

Use the original sending unit if at all possible. They are usually always good. The replacements do not use the correct King Seeley element. Although they "work" ,i.e. the gage needle goes up and down, they will never be accurate.
Back to the original sender. The brass floats usually will have a tiny crack develop after the 60 to 70 years. New brass floats are available from the trusted suppliers. Your gage will now be accurate.
Just an opinion

This guy can rebuild your old send units. The drake replacement do not work very well. but if you just need a float do what adileo did and buy a float and welded it to your old sending unit

Go to a local garage, many of the fuel pumps now come as an assembly with the gas sender, they have nice floats, new ones come with the new pump, old ones get thrown away
