Homemade Outside Mirror Mount
 

I don't like to drill holes in my cars, so I made this mirror mount to clamp on the top door hinge. The mirror and arm was bought at a swap meet and is meant to bolt onto a round windshield frame, so I had to make a mount with a round post. You can see in the third picture that I used rubber to shim for the diameter difference, but I will make and weld a steel collar onto the post. The rubber allows too much vibration.

I started by making a steel curved plate to fit the hinge curve, then welded it to a steel tube. I drilled holes in the tube to allow the screw head to fit through, as well as a screwdriver to tighten them. I made a thread bar to fit the inside of the hinge. As shown this is clamped to the door half of the hinge, so it swings out of the way when the door is opened.

Nice, I replaced both of my mirrors with driver side only clamp on type..then added a small $2 stick on mirror from walmart... Not perfect, negative 10 points but I can now see cars from both sides ;) Looks good enough for me...

Tom always comes up with the neatest ideas. He certainly has the creativity to make pretty much anything.

Me, not being near so creative, took the "easy" way out: bought a couple of hinge pin mirrors from Snyder's. My creative part was in making the mirror that says "driver's side only" fit the passenger side as well.

I bought two of those hinge mounted mirrors for my car once. They cracked and chipped the paint so they got recycled. But then again I think they were Vintique which explains a lot.

I bought a stanchion mounted rear view mirror and mounted on my roadster pickup and liked it so much better than the spare mounted one I got another one for the passenger side. I didn't put it all together about having a squealing/whistling sound that I liked to have never located that was caused from the passenger mirror. I first thought it was my fan belt, replaced it. Didn't stop the noise so I pulled the speedometer cable next and lubed it all up, even checked the front wheel bearings. Then I started realizing that noise didn't start till I put that right hand mirror on. So I unscrewed it and made a test run and that was the culprit. I guess I needed to do some preventive maintenance anyway.

I would try to reposition the passenger side mirror, or look for any holes or places that might make a whistle. You could also try placing small pieces of tape in various places to find out where the whistle is coming from. A passenger with a length of hose in his ear and moving it around the mirror also might locate the source.

I place friction tape between my mount and the paint, so no worries about chipping the paint. Someday if I get spare time and money at the same time, I hope to paint the car a nice color and get rid of the puke green.

I have a combination spot light and mirror that fit my grandfather's open car in the early 20s that I could rig up like what you did, neat! Thanks.

These mirrors are from a mid 30s coup, not stock, but not bad looking, no chipped paint like the clamp on's. A small spacer is the modification.
