General question---Not Model A

Without going to my neighborhood tire shop how can I break down the bead on the rim. I want to repaint both sides of the rims on my late 60's car and masking the tire isn't acceptable and doesn't stick. If it were broke down I could throw a rag between the tire and rim and spray to m yhearts content. As always, thanks.

If your 50's car has a 50's bumper jack hook it to the bumper and put the base on the side of the tire, jack away.Something similar like a sissor jack works too.

Out hunting, we used to lay the (flat) tire down on the ground and drive over the edge of the flat tire with another vehicle just next to the rim. The weight, of course, would pop the tire off the rim.

Back in the day when no regular garage would work on wire wheels my uncle taught me the "using the other car technique". Lay the tire and wheel down, have someone stand on it and direct the driver of the other car up onto the tire. As mentioned the trick is to get close to the tire and rim and slowly drive partially around the tire. Do it slow and it works great.

Use a 2X6 next to the rim and drive onto the board

My local tire place doesn't charge me for pulling the tire off the rim, as long as I bring the painted rim back to them for remounting and balancing, which seems fair to me.

Half moon cardboard will be better than rags.

Before I retired, I have had to paint 100/s of wheels.

I cut circular sections out of old sheet tin in 13 and 14 and 15 inch sizes and reused them over and over.

Took 4 quarter sections to do each tyre.

Sometimes, on a quick job, just letting the air out would let the tin slip in behind rim enough.

I think Eastwood has a collar to do just what you want.
