37--21stud aluminum rear seal

Hi guys, I'm sure one of you guys know the answer. I just acquired a 37 21stud, it was all stripped except the aluminum rear seal in the block, after digging through all the parts I found the main bearing caps, there was no aluminum rear seal in the cap, There is quite gap in the rear of that cap but I don't think an aluminum seal belongs in the 37 rear main, can any one answer for sure? Thank guys. Walt

Think they do have the aluminum seal type part, it is the one with a "V" cut in it to clear the slinger. Is that what you are referring to Walt? It is just an air seal and looks very similar to the later (mid 38 and later) actual aluminum seal piece.

VanPelt has them listed, but I don't understand the notation with them! He has 78-6335 (upper) listed as 36 thru 42 (same for the lower 78-6336). But then on part 91A-6335 it is listed as 39 thru 48 and 18B-6335 is also listed as 39 thru 48.

From what I know, the "V" shaped slinger one should be for 36 thru somewhere in the mid 38 model year and the square cut one for the seal should be from mid 38 thru 48.

Edit: Just looked it up and the Green Book has them listed the same way, 36-42 & 39-48. It calls out the specific crankshaft that each mates up with, but the difference is still oil slinger vs rope seal.

JSeery. I know what you mean about the V type retainer, you probably know I build a lot of 39-40 and up but I haven't done a 36-37 for so long I cain,t quite remember about the retainer in the cap, Fred at Obsolete just called me, he was just building a 37 and he said it don't take one In the cap, and I believe he's right. Thanks Walt

I'd read that some of them didn't use them, my 38 21-stud engine has one. Not sure what the difference is and the theory behind some having them and some not. I'm well aware of your engine knowledge, hope I didn't sound like I was attempting to tell you something you already knew!! Sure your engine knowledge far exceeds mine. LOL

I think your right some did have, some didn't, I went up in my storage barn this after noon, had 6-8 cans full of main caps, I'd saved from junk engines, one was marked 37, I looked at the rear main, the retainer wasn't in it but it had squared sides that would hold an aluminum retainer, it probably came out of a 38 21stud, the one I'm working on don't have anything to hold the retainer, I assumed mine was a 37 engine when I got it, but I guess if I had both side by side I couldn't tell the difference. Thanks Walt
