shock arms Has any one pulled the splined shock arms off the shaft,
I need to do this to replace the shaft seals, I can make up a puller ,but how hard and tight are they pushed on. Thanks Lawrie |
Re: shock arms Lawrie, I recently removed some arms from '35 front shocks by using my hydraulic press. The most difficult part for me was getting a fixture that I could locate between the shock body, and underside of arm. Then finding a way to support all of this while operating the press.

Re: shock arms I did the same as John. Luckily I had a fixture that worked.

Re: shock arms 1 Attachment(s)
John and Chuck,
using the info that my mate sent me, I made a little puller to pull the arms off,it was dead easy. I will make a couple more tools and then I can source some seals and O rings for them, and have them working good. Lawrie |
Re: shock arms Lawrie, I saw the puller shown in the pages of information you posted and thought....why didn't I think of making something like that when I was struggling with trying to remove some shock arms? That's definitely a good way to do it, and the bolts eliminate the need for using a press.
Hey, by the time you finish making all the necessary tooling, and have the experience of rebuilding your own shocks, you could easily go into the business ;) :D |
Re: shock arms 1 Attachment(s)
Looks like KRW made some tools for the shocks. I believe the kit below is WW2

Re: shock arms Nice tool kit!!

Re: shock arms It would be interesting to know how to recondition these shock absorbers. Is there a diagram on the breakdown of the inside of the shocks available and is there any special parts required to recondition them.

Re: shock arms Ian see my post from yesterday on the info on the shocks, thats what you need.

Re: shock arms Thanks Lawrie for that great and interesting rare information. I have now printed it all off.

Re: shock arms Ian,
All you got to do is make up a heap of tools and pullers like I have been the last day or so, Also nice to know that you can make the later shocks fit my 33 and 34. Lawrie |
Re: shock arms Lawrie,
I have always made a lot of different tools and pullers too dismantle and assemble different V8 parts for years, and when I pull them out now I wished I had marked them as I cannot remember when I made them several decades ago, what V8 part they are for. |
Re: shock arms 1 Attachment(s)
Finally got all 14 of mine and Kpars shocks apart,
4 x 33 4 x34 2 x repos,( cr_p) they had a cast iron shaft, 3 x 40 1 x A I made 6 special tools for the job,and one fixture. By cutting and bending the arms on the later shocks they can be made to fit my 33 and 34 fronts. I doubt very much if I can get genuine seal kits for them (there are three or four different shaft seals amongst them.) So will work out some modern seals or O rings for them. Lawrie |

Based on the picture of your workbench, looks like your needing to drink plenty of coffee to stay alert on the job :D :D Whoops...that was Aptamil baby formula in those cans being used for parts, not coffee :o:eek: |
Re: shock arms Great work Lawrie let us know what parts you use and your progress.
