... move my freshly painted chassis around.
My chassis is painted and i'm soon ready to start bolting in the rebuilt front and rear axles. Due to lack of space (too many projects) I'd like to be able to move my chassis around with just the axles bolted in. No wheels and tires on it.
I need ideas on making something(s) with casters mounted at the four corners of the chassis that will allow mobility. I thought about using 4 regular jack stands sitting on square angle iron bases with 4 casters mounted to each, but I was afraid they would topple over if I hit a snag. It would be best if everything was mounted solid.
Any ideas.

the cheap dollies also like to slide out and flip.... but better than nothing //// just be careful

When I was working on my 29 I to had the same problem. I built a framework out of 2by 12s put a piece of 3/4 plywood underneath and mounted a set of casters from harbor freight on each end and bolted some uprights to it. I mounted some carpeted 2/6 rails to the top of it and set my frame on it. It rolled around perfectly and gave me room to install all of the remaining items ft rear end rods etc. and it only cost about 45 bucks when I no longer needed it I gave it to another model a guy for the same use.

Build two 4' x 4' x 24" high "boxes" with verticals on each corner that are slotted to accept the frame rails. Add four swivel wheels.

Then when you are done, you will have two 4' x 4' portable work benches after you put tops on them.

Thanks for the ideas guys.

Maybe a variation of something like pictured. I found these on-line.
They'd have to be taller so the running board brackets don't drag.
I'd make them to bolt onto where the backing plates go.

Keep the ideas coming.

doesn't look like it would be too hard to either make something like those or even modify them to make them taller, maybe just an extension bolted where they bolt to the spindles/axle's

Ok guys. This is what I came up with. I went an entirely different route.

The casters are from home depot and rated for 310 lbs each.
The steel is 1/4" plate and 1/4" thick 2x2 square tube. I off-set the 2x2 uprights so they clear (I hope) the axles when installed. They should be long enough so the backing plates clear the ground also.
They're all bolted to the chassis using the shock holes.
I'm hoping I can assemble the whole chassis (minus the engine / trans) with these installed so I can maneuver it around better.
The only thing I might do yet is put some kind of removable X-brace crosswise so they don't flex side to side.

Later on when I need to work on the body, i'll make up a square tube frame with correct body bolt hole spacing, and mount these fixtures to it.

There was a post not so long ago where a gentleman mounted the frame between two engine stands. It worked like a rotisserie and brought the frame up off of the floor to a nice workable height.
