What lube for a 39 top loader and how much

I'm wondering what you all are using for your early Ford Transmissions? There are seemingly limitless options out there for both the actual fluids and then fancy additives. I'm a firm believer in keeping things simple, but it some of these products are superior I'm willing to use them. Also, what do you use as a fluid level in your top loader trans.

Thanks
Z

I use 85-140 gear oil in the transmission and rear end of all my Flathead powered vehicles with standard transmissions.

MAY need to pay attention to the GL rating. Traditionally GL-5 was considered an issue with transmission "yellow" metal and GL-4 was considered a better option. Some current GL-5 gear oils claim to be "yellow" metal compatible. I would use a GL-4 oil, but just be aware of the issue if you us a GL-5.

What JSeery said above, and fill both to the bottom of the FILL hole. DD

Mac Van Pelt rebuilt my trans and he said use GL4 so as not to destroy the yellow metal.

Just rebuilt a transmission for a friend and noticed that the shifter seemed to be filled with a heavy grease, This is not the first time that I have seen this. Does the top shifter get lubed by splash from the gear box, or should it be filled with a wheel bearing type grease?
