33 loose sterring problem After driving about 100klms last April on the worst dirt road ever the 33 steering got a little loose, and coming back from out west last Saturday it was a pain to drive at 55 on the capricorn highway, what with rough road due to the heavy truck traffic,a strong cross wind , and wanting to get home for the footy final.
so today I thought I would readjust up the steering box,got it up on the axle stands and found the nut holding the pitman arm onto the sector shaft was loose, took it off and cleaned up the spline ,reassembled it with loctite super retaining compound and torqued it up. Hey preto back to nice steering. One thing I,m paranoid about is the steering box,as to get a good right hand drive one is nearly impossible. So if you do a lot of miles, check this nut. Lawrie |
Re: 33 loose sterring problem Lawrie, the pitman arm nut originally should have a large strong spring washer under it to prevent it coming loose. The Loctite might be an overkill and also make it difficult to remove at a later date unless you use some heat on it which I would not really like to do. Regards. Kevin.

Re: 33 loose sterring problem Kevin, there was no lock washer, now it has ,
my fault,20 od years ago when I got the 33 it was loose then and I put a large washer under the nut and lockwired it,I was going to fix it properly but clean forgot, lucky I got it before it buggered the spline. Lawrie |
Re: 33 loose sterring problem Lawrie I may have a RHD 33-4 box or parts can't remember exactly what . I will look when I get home from work today .

Re: 33 loose sterring problem When you do find it Tony, I'll race Lawrie to to the delivery van as I'd like to have a spare R/H box to rebuild also.
