Big Boy Heads

Help Ford Barn
I am trying to make a decision as to use the big boy heads as shown in the picture on my flathead project. The flathead is 3-5/16 with a ¼ inch stroke, ¾ cam and three carburetors. The 59AB flathead is in a 34 five window coupe frame.

Those are cool heads. I have never seen these before. Who makes/sells them? What is their cost? Do you have a picture of the chamber side that you could post? Do you know any of the specs for these. Sorry lots of questions.https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/images/icons/icon5.gif Bill

Decision? What are your other options? Those "Big Boy" heads are very impressive. I too, am not familiar with them. What's the story on them?

Jim, Next time we are over there you will have to have him dig them out. I would love to see them. https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/images/icons/icon7.gif

Bob Denton remarked: “Big Boy heads were made in Bakersfield, California”, says Bob, “by a company called CMC Engineering. I do not believe there are more than a dozen sets of these heads around. As you can see, they are quite thick due to the increased cooling capacity and they have a Ford V8 60 type water manifold on them. The company is gone. I bought these in the early nineties along with a new French block, pistons, 4″ crank, and everything I needed to assemble a mean flathead.

What amazes me is: Somepeople will go to the time and expense to design a new set of heads for the Flathead , and still use the original combustion chamber. Just flaten out the transfer area and put the spark plug in the original location. Fortunately there are a few people that think. These are beautiful heads, and alittle thought could have made them Great heads.

Ron

With all that there is out there regarding technological advancements,I often think about creating a line of heads that use the most modern design and thinking and put them into production. The advancements and knowledge that have been gained since these designs were created is quite a bit. Of courss, with any small production run, cost would be high and production would be low, but I do believe there is market for a truly high performance head. The assumption would be that builder do other mods to obtain the max benefit of the design. But we all know what happens when you assume.

Why not?

Re: Big Boy Heads

All it takes is a MIG welder and a milling machine and you can have any chamber shape and plug location you want with any brand head.
I have done it several times. It works great.

I'm with Tim,
I see no reason not to, you may have to rasle up something for the top hoses, I don't think the usual center water outlet in a 34 type top hoses will slide right in, due to the hight of the new outlets.

And then there is all those much longer new bolts needed.... or studs.

Re: Big Boy Heads

Flat32 designed and built a set of heads with a modern combustion chamber and pluglocation using modern flow tech. However production costs would have been too high. I wanted a set of them but not sure how many sets he had cast.. Si I did as Pete and JWL did, moved the plug and made myown chambers. Flatattack make a great cylnderhead, I've used them, but they may be out of production..
