Wiper Question
 

Here's a shot of the wiper on my '30 coupe. It's operated by a push-pull knob on the inside but doesn't work continuously. That is, when you pull the knob it will wipe to one side and stop. Push the knob and it wipes back to the other side and stops. Won't keep on wiping. Your thoughts? I use Rain-X and don't go out in the rain anyway so it's not a major problem, I'd just like the wipers to work the way they are supposed to. Any help would be appreciated.

Had the same thing on Minerva, sucked in some quality Gun Oil & it worked superb. I guess the flapper was gummy.

A TIP:
If you think your wipers don't go back & forth, due to the reversing mechanism, with engine off, work the arm back & forth & you can hear the mechanism "click", letting you know it's OK, without ripping it apart.

WD 40 will ruin pot metal
i lost a couple of door key cylinders using it
i dont even keep it in the barn

A worn-out / deteriorated leather seal on the paddle inside of the wiper motor is a common cause of poor vacuum wiper operation. On the paddle there is a round seal which reverses the motor. When the round seal leaks, the wiper blade will to one side and stop.

Adding oil is a temporary but an effective fix, and it has the advantage of not having to disassemble the motor. Eventually the oil will be sucked into the engine. A more durable solution is to install a rebuilding kit into the wiper motor. Bratton's will sell you a kit and give you an exploded view diagram of the motor as well.

Even when the wiper motor is working like new, its speed will fluctuate with the intake manifold vacuum. A better idea is RainX.

WD40 is not a lubricant. It is a water dispersant. Using it in place of a good quality oil will result in a layer of silicon (or something like it) being deposited to the possible detriment of any mechanism.

I keep a can of WD40 to spray over the ignition of my vehicles if needed after washing the motor. I also keep several different penetrating and light lubricating oils to use depending upon the need.

Well, I used a small amount of good gun oil and it seems to working fine now. Thanks to you all for all the good suggestions!
