Noisy rattle sound from rear underside of '36 coupe I am getting a noisy metal on metal sound from the rear underside of my 1936 coupe. It happens when I drive on bumpy roads. It's not the spare tire, the luggage rack, the rumble seat, or the exhaust pipe. A friend stood on the rear bumper as I drive and it got a little better. Could it be a shock or a broken leaf? Can fluid be put in the shock?

Re: Noisy rattle sound from rear underside of '36 coupe I had a rattle under the 33 ,it was the brake rod support bracket snapped.

Re: Noisy rattle sound from rear underside of '36 coupe Worn out shock link?

Re: Noisy rattle sound from rear underside of '36 coupe Does it have an E brake rod to the cable, I think on my 35 pick up it can hit the torque tube, so that can rattle...?

Re: Noisy rattle sound from rear underside of '36 coupe 1. Could be.
2. Yes. |
Re: Noisy rattle sound from rear underside of '36 coupe No way to answer that question from here. Remember the scene from Cape Fear where De Niro ties himself to the underside of the car while someone else drives? That's what you have to do, on a bumpy road of course. Good Luck.

Re: Noisy rattle sound from rear underside of '36 coupe You know how sound travels through steel. Could be almost anything. I had a similar noise, knock, under my 35 PU which turned out to be a worn ball socket joint on the front wishbone. Put a repair spacer in the hollow, put in a new ball, and quiet and peaceful ever since. Lawson

Re: Noisy rattle sound from rear underside of '36 coupe I had a pesty rattle as you described and was the bolts that hold the shocks to
the frame. They didn't feel loose but moved when hitting bumps. It was only on the right front. G.M. |
Re: Noisy rattle sound from rear underside of '36 coupe I get a similar noise on my '39 pickup while on a bumpy road. I think it's the parking brake cable where it adjusts under the torque tube.

Re: Noisy rattle sound from rear underside of '36 coupe My '36 rattles a little because one of the brake rods are too close to the exhaust.I plan on fixing it next Septober.

Re: Noisy rattle sound from rear underside of '36 coupe Thanks for all the helpful comments. It looks like the worn rear brake rod supports need to be replaced.
