Which Disc brake rear to use in a 1955 F-100
 

Looking for what kind of Ford OR Chevy disc brake rear end to use in a 1955 Ford F-100 with the correct width and strong braking power, -- OR is there a disc conversion kit made for the original Dana 44 rear -- Thanks

If you get a 9 inch, there are a number of vendors that offer disc brake kits.

You may want to check this out: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech...8_8-axle.shtml The 8.8 found in late Ford Explorers and F-150's have disc brakes these are plentiful in many Pick-A-Parts for under $200 complete and many are Posi in the link it also gives you the widths of many axles.

The original rear end is 61" wms to wms as are the two mentioned below.

'87 Lincoln MKVII fits and has disc brakes...5 on 4 1/2 bolt pattern. Can find posi rear ends with road gearing.

'67 - 72 F-150 9 inch fits and has 5 on 5 1/2 bolt pattern. Disc conversion kits are available. More gear options available and easy to change center sections.
Spring perch is located correctly when using stock springs on this 9"

I talked with Classic Disc Brakes at 888 376 0771 and they have the conversion kit for your original axle. "They like F-100's !"

Hard to find, but a 9 inch out of a late 70s Lincoln Versailles may work for you. It should have disc brakes already on it I think. I do not know the width and the bolt pattern would be different.
Alternatively, you may be able to use a disc brake conversion out of a Jeep CJ, it should have the same bolt pattern I believe. You may want to double check the application, I think around 1968 or 1969 the Dana 44 went from a two-piece axle and hub type to a 1 piece axle by about 1970. I don't know how or if that will affect anything. A full size Jeep kit may work if you can find it. Here is an example of a kit:

I was thinking of the conversion kit on my original Dana 44 rear as Dick suggested since my original rear is completely rebuilt-- but since this ad I did lots of reseach on it and did not find anybody that used this kit to get any reviews on it and for the DOLLARS it cost, I will not take the chance if it will work or not-- I will keep working on my frame mount power booster and get that to work--Thanks
