39 ford deluxe mechanical fuel pump Yesterday I changed my stock fuel pump for a 1948 glass bowl pump. It was a bigger job than one could imagine. I had to remove the fuel pump mount tube, mount the pump then slide the entire assembly onto the pump push rod and bolt it down. I am wondering if the pump drive arm is fitting properly onto the pump push rod. Have not tried to start the car yet. The entire assembly seemed to fit tight. I suspect the difficulty resulted from push rod being in its highest position on the cam. What should I do next? Perhaps I should not be concerned. Regards: Jon Laing

Re: 39 ford deluxe mechanical fuel pump That's the easier way to install the pump, but you should crank the engine so the push rod is in the low position. Walt

Re: 39 ford deluxe mechanical fuel pump Thanks Walt. At this stage it sounds like I should not be concerned about trying to start the engine. Jon L.

Re: 39 ford deluxe mechanical fuel pump If the push rod was in it's highest position when you installed the pump, turning the engine over shouldn't hurt anything. The push rod can't go any higher.
You'll like having the glass bowl on the pump. Seems to keep the whole system primed better than a pump with out the bowl. |
