F1 3 speed top loader

I am in the process of changing my tranny in my 1950 F1 from a 4-speed to a 3-speed. I have my tranny at a transmission shop and said I need a different cluster gear and also 1st and 2nd. Yesterday I went a picked up three 3-speeds. 2 top loaders and 1 side loader. The side loader had about one inch of grease and sludge all over it so I pressure washed it this morning. It cleaned up pretty good. Underneath all the crap this appeared in Yellow bold print. 3C8. Does anyone know what that stood for or why it was there?

Paint on markings are not common to any of the old gearboxes I've ever purchased. What are the numbers on the transmission (VIN)? Maybe military?

More like a independent rebulders stock number

I see you have the cover off and use the gears if good. Use all gears if swapping and rear shaft if not the same.

The only numbers on the tranny case are 7-24-51 and 8M-7222. There is no sn# at the top.

Sounds like a 49 to early 51 Mercury gearbox with no tail shaft on it. At least I didn't see one in the photograph.

I had similar markings on the side of a very original 3 spd truck trans from 1951. I took it as a way of easy identification for the production line. Much akin to paint daubs on differentials, springs, etc. Makes it easy for the worker to grab the right part off the shelf and offers a quick easy confirmation for the QA department on spot checks.

Looks a generic 40 and up side loader to me, minus the trans mount. Shift arms are Ford, not stamped like the 49-50 Merc ones I have.

The shift arms don't look like 49 Mercury.

Re: F1 3 speed top loader

Took some other pictures of this tranny case. I already took the guts out and took them to the transmission shop to have installed in my 1940 top loader case. Sure hope they fit as they have a different number of teeth on the gears than mine does (my large end of cluster has 28 teeth and this one has 27 etc. etc.) Numbers on bell read 7-24-51 and I just found numbers on the rear of case which You can see in the pictures. Any Help telling me what its out of would help.

Re: F1 3 speed top loader

I can't quite make out the numbers on that case but it looks like all the 1940 thru 48 side shifter cases. The side cover is Mercury but the arms look to be earlier Ford parts. The 49 thru early 51 Mercury cases were all squared off on the back where the tail shaft goes on. It might have been for one of the F1 side shift set ups but they are kind of rare. Most F1 commercials have top shift.
