Re: 1928 long rod connecting tie rods

Put anti-seize on the tie rod threads, then screw the ends in place an equal number of turns, say 10 turns. You have a left hand thread on one end and a right hand thread on the other end, so when you turn the rod to adjust the toe in, the ends stay equally threaded to the rod. Then lube the steering ball sockets and install. Adjust the tow-in for about 1/16" toe in according to the SERVICE BULLETINS.

in the snyders catalog they show a spring and another piece going into the tie rod then you screw the plug in. I did not have the spring and the other piece, whatvere it is, onmine when I took it off. thanks john

Re: 1928 long rod connecting tie rods

I just replaced mine with the teflon coated bronze bushings and new springs. Normal tool for adjusting tie-rod is a plumbers pipe wrench, I found the marks on mine when I repainted it. The bushings made a big difference in driving. Set has 4 sets so do the drag link as well. Without a spring an end or link could separate from its ball which would instantly make your steering wheel just something to hang onto during the wreck.

Where did you get these? The ones I got were just plastic or some such.

Ford28,
If necessary, GET hands on help! This stuff needs to be installed in a proper & safe manner, or you could lose your steering ability COMPLETELY!!
Someone put All NEW parts in Vermins' tie rod & drag link, BUT, the new spring in the rear drag link was TOO short & he shimmied & it's a MIRACLE that it DIDN'T fall off the ball! Even though the spring was TOO SHORT, the IDIOT just screwed the plug in "FLUSH"!!
Look at exploded catalog views of the Drag Link ends, the "loading" of the parts are NOT the same for BOTH ENDS!!!!!

Hey John,
IMO and experience, you do need the spring AND attendant socket that goes with. Contact Berts in Denver. Steve will set you up with correct parts. FWIW, I believe that that tie rod and components are same same for '28 thru '31. I just did this job on my '30 entire front end.

The tie rod and drag links both use the same kits. If the balls on your steering/pitman arms are egg or football shape fix them first. The need to be round. Sounds like you need to buy a repair manual and owners manual.

THERE IS A DIFFERENCE IN EACH END OF THE DRAG LINK, AS TO AN ADDITION OF AN EXTRA PART & DIFFERENT LOADING SEQUENCE OF THE PARTS!! I DON'T KNOW IF THEY'RE ALL THAT WAY, OR NOT! (TRUST ME!) Yes, the parts in each end of the TIE ROD are the SAME. My car is a JUNE '29 Coupe.
Someone once posted a LARGE exploded view of it, not sure where the pic came from. Gregg & The Dog:cool: both saw the pic & we printed it out, but I can't find it.
"Maybe" someone could SEARCH for it & POST it. We have to be SURE we're SAFE!

Does it really matter which way the drag link is installed? I noticed that the DL on our CCPU is installed opposite to what L Andrews shows in his book.

Carl, you have the older style that were teflon. The newer ones are Bronze and teflon and a direct replacement for the ones you have. I still have the Teflon only ones also. If/when they wear out, I'll replace them.

Hey katy,
Yeah, CAN be installed either way, but 'correct' way is like diagram shows.
You have another option also, if your A is not for show, and it has benefits that the stock does not have. Looks are about same to most people.
I made an 'adjustable' drag link, but then noticed that the suppliers sell such equipment. Made mine from spare connecting/tie rod, thereby having BOTH ends adjustable and same appearance;) !

THANK YOU, My FRIEND,
SEE, I'm NOT full of BS, there's that little thin seat, it "MAY" be included in the tie rod end kits, also, but only used in a certain drag link end. The position of the "KEYHOLE" tells you which end of the drag link it's used in!

Re: 1928 long rod connecting tie rods

Service bulletin recommends swapping ends when servicing the drag link, something about clearance but I swapped mine. Anyone else?

Re: 1928 long rod connecting tie rods

I am lookiing into it, swapping the drig link end around. I cannot center my steering wheel so will try this to see if it centers my steering wheel. Just out a small amoung but would like it centered when going straight, or it's make an adjustable length drag link. Are there other suggestions?

:)
