50/50 mixture of Acetone and ATF I have a question...., when using a 50/50 mixture of acetone and ATF as a penetrating oil to loosen stuck parts, can the acetone/ATF mixture be stored in a plastic container, or does it have to be a metal or glass container ?? I never used it before, and not sure if it will attack the plastic.
Anybody know for sure ? Thanks, Sal |
Re: 50/50 mixture of Acetone and ATF I have had some in one of those plastic flip top squirty drinks bottles runners use. Your results may vary, test with a small quantity first.

Re: 50/50 mixture of Acetone and ATF I've used it from a plastic pump container without issue.

Re: 50/50 mixture of Acetone and ATF Perhaps try a small thumb pump type oil can.

Re: 50/50 mixture of Acetone and ATF I put a quart of each in a gal paint thinner can, shake it up, then fill a metal squirt can. You have to shake each time you use, it separates. Walt

Re: 50/50 mixture of Acetone and ATF I've used it in both metal and plastic containers without issue. As Walt stated, shake before use. It does work well.

Re: 50/50 mixture of Acetone and ATF I had a 5 gallon metal can of acetone that destroyed the plastic pour spout
on the top of the can from fumes I guess. G.M. |
Re: 50/50 mixture of Acetone and ATF Mixed it in a plastic coffee container, and used a plastic ketchup bottle to squirt into cylinders.
That stuff WORKS!! |

Nobody has ever accused me of being a 'safety nut', but I'm thinking that to my grandkids that could look a lot like a strawberry-kiwi juice drink. This debate brings up the guy who invented the 'universal solvent'. Unfortunately there was nothing he could keep it in..... And lastly, I have had that mix in a 59ab for 3 months and this afternoon I pulled the timing gear cover and cam gear and plan to haul the engine into my shop and see if it will turn. I have had good luck with it and also mmo and acetone. |
Re: 50/50 mixture of Acetone and ATF Thanks to everyone for all of the good input.

Re: 50/50 mixture of Acetone and ATF My experience was that the bottle i chose was attacked. Acetone will dissolve some plastics.

Re: 50/50 mixture of Acetone and ATF Good point about safety. No youngsters in my garage, though, so didn't cross my mind.

Re: 50/50 mixture of Acetone and ATF Glass is best but the acetone tends to evaporate over time so more must be added for each use.
|
Re: 50/50 mixture of Acetone and ATF I have always stored my mix in a plastic oil container. I have never had issues with the plastic melting. I keep the cap sealed as to no acetone evaporates. The concoction works great.
