light switch
 

1931 light switch does not stay at the index point. IE it turns when making corners, if my mind serves me correctly the round plate that the wires are soldered to achieves to indexing. IE holds the switch where it's placed, any one have a easy fix or do I have to change the plate? Thanks in advance. Frank

Minerva had that problem---Built a Play Dough dam around the lite switch, filled it with oil & let it set for a few days, NO more problem.
Some may say, "But oil "may" get into your headlight switch & RUIN it"!!------"That's OK, it'll just make it work smoothly & prevent CORROSION"! Why do so many try to OVERCOMPLICATE a simple & tough car design, life is SHORT, just be practical & enjoy your car. If you get tired of my ranting & rattling, just DON'T read my POSTS! (EASY) I use BOLD type, cuz the Dog sed, "It looks GOOD"!

start with indexing the forks in the light switch housing at 6 and 12 oclock. You may need to disassemble and re assemble the light switch to get it to function correctly.
After learning that the replacement light harness end plate did not need to be sanded to a smaller diameter, and was designed to be indexed by the light switch housing everything went together after I built up the sanded down plate with jbweld to get the correct fit.
That was a short beer job, and I don't drink.

I had this problem and it was caused by the lever on the switch control. Where the lever attaches to the round section that has the horn button it was slightly proud of the outside of the round perimeter. This caused it to drag on the inside of the steering wheel where it surrounds the horn button. I filed the raised area and all seems well now. I can turn the wheel with the light switch removed and the lever stays put.

I also had to sand the area which surrounds the perimeter of the light switch so it was not dragging on the wheel and it fixed my problem..

I think that the indexing indents must be worn out, I assume they are in the switch! Thanks for the input. Frank

Turning out of the gas station driveway @ night & apparently my arm brushed the switch lever, a COP pulled me over for NO TAIL LIGHTS, stop & headlights were OK. Cycled through ALL the positions & everything was GOOD! Apparently the switch had moved just TRIFLE & killed ONLY the tail lights! Nice Cop, even gave me his home phone number, as he wanted to buy a Model A, as a retirement hobby.

this is happing on mine as well I called Beret's in Denver and told me what it was that was causing mine. I am going up tomorrow to get the 2$ brass bushing that goes under the switch that stops that and I just put it all back together dang it.

yep the brass bushing needs to be there.. if its a repo rod it wil also need some sanding where it fits into the bushing.. i use 80 grit sandpaper.. then after that a little lube is your friend

I had a bushing there and it was worse. I think I need to find the location of the indent for the indexing . Is that in the switch itself?

if its a repo rod it may need sanding the rod should spin freely on its own with no drag with bushing installed

Like Mitch said the rod needs to spin freely. Remove the switch from the bottom
of the column and make sure the rod spins freely.
