Whenever I paint a distributor housing I screw in a 5\8" pipe plug (easily obtained from Home Depot). This will keep the paint out and ensure a good ground when the ignition cable is crewed in. I also press in a length of insulated wire into the slot the upper plate rides in. This will keep the paint out and also ensure a good ground. The last trick is to mask off the bottom portion of the housing that sits down in and on the head (also for good grounding). Tom Endy |
Re: what is thread size of hole in distributor for ignition cable? I am familiar with 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 & 3/4 in pipe sizes. What is a 5/8 in pipe plug?

Re: what is thread size of hole in distributor for ignition cable? It "looks" more like 1/4" NPT. Pipe sizes are gauged by the pipes' INSIDE DIAMETER.

Re: what is thread size of hole in distributor for ignition cable? I've never heard of 5/8" pipe either so I went and measured a pop out
cable and it is 11/16-16 NS thread. Bob |

I think the plug size I have been using are actually 3\8 pipe, not a 5\8. They screw into the distributer base easy with enough threads to keep the paint out. They are pretty thick with paint by now.

Re: what is thread size of hole in distributor for ignition cable? Be careful if using a pipe plug. 3/8 NPT is 18 TPI. If the thread in the distributor is 16 TPI it could damage the threads in the distributor housing. Just my 2 cents worth.
