1935 Ford Pickup GVW The DMV needs the GVW on my truck to issue a tag. I was wondering if any of you guys had the info. Thanks, John.

Re: 1935 Ford Pickup GVW If Florida is anything like Michigan, you may need a certified weight, not just word of mouth. I tried telling that to mine but they needed me to take the car and have it weighed on a scale and certified. It was a big hassle.

Re: 1935 Ford Pickup GVW As I understand it the GVW is the weight of the vehicle, fluids, passengers and cargo.
Figure 2800 lbs for the truck, 400 for passengers, and 1000 lbs for cargo and it should get you close at 4200 lbs. round up to 4500 |
Re: 1935 Ford Pickup GVW John,
My registration for my '35 PU shows 2600 for the weight and the GVW is blank. (You'd want to guess the GVW is + 1000, but they really might not need it.) I'll be doing some tag work in MacClenny either today or tomorrow. I'll see what's going and let you know ... unless you beat me to it. Hoop |

Re: 1935 Ford Pickup GVW Pop's '36 pickup had ' GVW 2600' painted on each door under his name, town, and state, back in the early 50's.

Re: 1935 Ford Pickup GVW The Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) for older trucks/pickups varies from state to state. Some time around 1937/38 GM and some of the other light truck manufactures started to put GVW tags on their vehicles, Ford did not.
Some states require the unladen weight to be listed on the registration, and the GVW posted on the exterior of the vehicle. This applies to all light and heavy duty trucks. Most states license commercial vehicles by the unladen and GVW.. If there is a weight shown on the vehicle registration, it might be to your advantage to get a certified weight slip on the vehicle. Generally speaking a pre 1949 1/2 ton pickup will weigh under 3,500 lbs with a GVW rating of 4,700 lb. A pre '41 1/2 ton will barely break 3,K. It is very common to find commercial pickups that have a weight in excess of 4.5K shown on the registration, this happens when the truck was sold new and was equipped with special equipment that added to the weight. As time went bye, the special equipment was removed, making the truck lighter and thereby eligible for lower license fees. I recently purchased a '64 Chevy C10, the weight on the registration was shown as being 4.5K with a GVW of 10K.. The factory weight tags were not attached to the cab. I called the man I had bought the truck from, asking the question about the missing tags and if the truck was a C10 pickup when he bought it. Interesting reply; the truck was originally a 1 ton C30 dually flat bed, the previous owner had taken the stake bed off of the truck, adding a 8' pickup box and flared rear fenders. The man I bought the truck from switched the dually axle for a GM 10 bolt, shortened the frame, installed a 6ft bed and removed the C30 emblems from the cab. Neither of the previous owners had given any thought to the weight and the amount of money they were paying in fees for weight the truck no longer had. I had the truck re-weighed, the unladen went down to 3.5K with a GVW of 4,700. The annual fees went down by $75. I guess the moral of this story is... Assume nothing.. |
Re: 1935 Ford Pickup GVW The CORRECT answer is .... as I guessed above, GVW is not an issue unless it exceeds 5,000 lbs. The '35 1/2 ton pickup @ 2600 vehicle weight does not come close fully loaded.
The recommended procedure, John, is to find a title clerk that knows the rules ... which is why I don't go to Duval county. This is a question about what the FLORIDA DMV rules are, NOT how much John's truck weighs. |
Re: 1935 Ford Pickup GVW But his original question wasn't about Florida's rules, he asked what his GVW is.
Glad you were able to provide him with what he needed. |
Re: 1935 Ford Pickup GVW Interesting on the 2600 lb weight, I recall my dad telling me about a job he had to haul hay, but needed to get certified weight for his '36 pu....I'm almost sure he said it was 2125lbs...the reason I bring this up, has anyone weighed their '35 or '36 pu?

Re: 1935 Ford Pickup GVW "... he asked what his GVW is."
You are, of course, exactly right. Also, he said, "The DMV needs the GVW on my truck to issue a tag." I am not sure that he really wanted the GVW or simply the vehicle weight. I gave him both requirements, reading from my Florida registration for my 1935 Ford pickup. Further, I discussed it with an experienced, knowledgeable title clerk. You make a great point about identifying exact needs. |
Re: 1935 Ford Pickup GVW " ... the reason I bring this up, has anyone weighed their '35 or '36 pu?"
Thought about this earlier and suspect something less than 2600 would be correct. I'm not sure that a few hundred pounds off would be a problem unless you started approaching a Gross Vehicle Weight requirement such as Florida's. For me, I don't want to attempt to change anything on an already issued title or on that title's transfer. The State of Florida says my PU weighs 2600 lbs, and I'm perfectly fine with that. I could take it over to the scrap recyclers to weigh it ... but I'd hate to chase that big forklift with my truck on it headed for the crusher. If someone has weighed their PU, be good to know. |
Re: 1935 Ford Pickup GVW I looked at the paper work today again and it just says they want the weight of the truck. I will go with 2625 lbs. It sounds good. Thanks to all that posted.
