Rear exle threads

Like most, the threads on my rear axles need a little reforming.

Do I just use a standard 5/8"-18 hex die or a reforming die? What is the difference if any?

What brand do you like? Carbon or HSS?

Thank you!

Your regular threading die will cut new threads where they are damaged,
which you don't really want. A reforming die will move the metal back to where it should be if the threads are not to badly damaged.
The tool pictured is the proper on to fix the threads. You open
it up and install it back where the threads are good then thread it
out towards the end of the axle where the threads are usually damaged.

I got mine on Epay, you have to watch for a deal because the
price goes from $14.50 to $88.00.

Don Turley had one on the swap meet a while back, don't know if it's still there or not.

Thanks again, Bob and others. Is anyone willing to rent one to me? Need the 5/8"-18 thread for both rear axles.

Larry,
I concur with Bob. If you open and chase the threads from the inside out to the edge it will do a good job and pull the threads back to shape for you

Otherwise I always prefer to use thread chasers as opposed to dies .
I would buy one as it is cheaper than an axle and a valuable tool to have
A guy can't have too many tools !

I have the same tool as Bob C. Bought it from Don Turley. It moves metal and restores the thread. Groves are deepened and lands are built up. It does not cut new threads. As stated, use it from the inside on good thread to the outside (end of the axle). It worked well for me.

A THREAD FILE is good, if you just have a couple or three, BAD SPOTS.
