Floppy axle??
 

So I pulled my rear hubs to work on the brakes. I discovered something which causes me to ask, is it normal to be able to move the axle up and down, perhaps a sixteenth of an inch or so? Doesn't move in and out but just a little bit up and down and left to right. Do I have a serious problem?

Yes that is normal. The axle is resting on the seal, I slip a piece of cardboard between the axle and the housing to take some stress off the seal, keep from reforming it.
