Porters or Smithy's ?

I just installed a set of Reds Headers and a pair of Smithy's muffler's but was really disappointed with the sound on the Smithy's. To me they are really quiet. I haven't put the tail pipes on yet, (Have to go to town and have the tail pipes made) Maybe that will make them sound better. I want a nice LOUD deep sound. I think I will take the Smithy's back off and try the Porters before they get welded on. Then Fish Tail Tips on the back. What do You guys think?

My '35 Cabriolet has dual exhausts with Red's headers and Smithy mufflers. They were on the car when I purchased it. To me they are not loud at all. I don't know about the other brands, but if you want LOUD, these are not the brand for you. Stan

If you want to rattle windows when you drive thru town, use two different length glasspacs. Rich

I use the Brockmans. Sound great according to everyone who hears them.

I am going to take a look at the Brockman's. I kind of like the idea of running 2 different size's, Thanks very Much Guy's! Any other comments?

If you block off your heat risers, you will find the Smitty's come alive some. I am running Red's Headers and long Smitty's behind a fairly well built '51 Merc in my '36 roadster.

I am very pleased with them.

it takes a bit for the smitties to get louder, been running mine for 2-3 months and they are starting to rack off. also, nothing against reds headers but steel headers don't give the sound i like, which is deeper. i run fenton cast iron headers. even stock cast iron manifolds sound better than steel headers imho.

I use ford tractor mufflers and change the ends on the mufflers. Small and cheap. Tractor supply sells them. Small diameter tailpipes help too on a flathead . 1-3/4 with duals

Interesting. On most OHV engines I have worked on it's the other way around. Cast iron muffles the exhaust sound and steel headers seem to amplify it.

I use 22" Smithys with stock manifolds. They are not loud, but they have a nice deep rumble. Loud gets obnoxious quickly on a long trip.

I can not comment on which sound better but the quality of the headrers Red sent me was great. Not only did they fit well but the ceramic (?) coating on them still looks new 5 years later.

Re: Porters or Smithy's ?

smittys are just another common type glass pack, not near the quality they were in the 60's, doesn't have the old time sound, they are living on there reputation from the 50's, change them to Brockmans steel packed

i am talking flathead v8 and have a preference for cast iron headers and that means fentons as far as i know. i think the steel headers sound too metalic for my taste is what i mean. tinny. cheap. like i said, just my opinion and preference. i haven't worked on an ohv engine for 30 years or so. thats why i like my flatties, i don't even know how to change plugs on the newer engines. way too complicated for me.

Re: Porters or Smithy's ?

I had never paid that much attention to the difference in the sound of flatheads with steel vs cast headers, that why I said interesting. I will pay more attention in the future and see if I can tell/learn the difference.
