Correct luggage rack - I hope!

1 Attachment(s)
My goal with my 29 tudor is to as close as possible return it to the way it might have looked in 1929. As part of that I am both removing all the "bling" added to it probably during its last restoration. and correcting any mistakes I find. The car came with a chrome with woodgrain slats repop luggage rack (on the left in the image below), which might look good on a deluxe roadster, but did not look like it belonged on a 29 tudor - which was basic transportation back then. I found a black luggage rack (on the right below) that looked more at home. But before I disassemble it to restore it and transfer over the mounting brackets to allow it to sit behind my spare, is this truly a "standard" luggage rack that would have been found on a non deluxe model A sedan?

When you remove the white walls you may want to advertise them on the barn to trade rather than buy new ones. Wayne

Re: Correct luggage rack - I hope!

Thanks for the info. I suspected as much when I spotted some chrome in a spot that did not get sprayed. I am guessing that this might be an original deluxe rack with steel slats while the other is definitely a repop with wood slats rather than steel. the distance between the two mounting points on the deluxe luggage rack brackets (both the repop and the other one I found is 4 1/2". Wondering if my extended brackets will work with a "standard" rack.

I guess what I'll do is clean up and use the black deluxe rack for now, while I (Now that I know what I am looking for - THANKS!) keep my eyes out for a "standard" one.

There were many types of rear carriers put on Model A's when new.
See all the adverts in ''Unauthorised Accessories'' [ Fahnestock] .
Probably more of the simple steel bar & bent frame types went on Sedans than the pressed steel ones sold by Dealers. I agree, those deluxe chrome ones do not look right on a standard Sedan
My Tudor had one of these steel bar ones put on when new .

There were a lot of racks being sold back when the Model A came out. Visit some swap meets you should find one that suits your needs.

The authentic 1929 rack was introduced by Ford in the June 1929 Service Bulletins and a photo is part of the article. By the way it cost the dealer $9 and suggested installation charge was $1. It was assigned part number A-18075.

Here is the photo shown in the service bulletin. It does fold in the middle like that other one. and it looks like it has no slats, wood or steel, - just a simple frame painted black.

BTW notice the full width (front?) bumper. Was that common for 29 sedans?

Only when it is time for new tires, but I am replacing the tubes with the correct ones with metal stems. The nickel dust covers should look terrific with the black powder coated wheels! :D

Cars that came new with a side mount spare had the full width bumper fitted.
With that pressed steel rack in the SB's, there may have been different mounting brackets, but I believe it would not fit if there was a rear mounted spare? Just think, the Dealer sells the rack & gets to sell a new fender with well also.
I know a car here with one & the owner had to make different brackets for it to fit with the rear spare wheel.

Not sure about the Tudors, but I have an original metal rack, A-18075, on my 29 Standard Coupe that fits nice with spare tire in the rear. HOWEVER the mounting brackets I do not believe are original but were off the reproduction one that I removed to put the original rack on.

As far as the "extended" rear bumper is concerned...Ford introduced this idea in the March 1928 Ford Service Bulletin and is also stated as such in the Parts Price Lists in the bumper sections. It is refered to in the Ford records as the "Rear Bumper (Cross Bar Type)". With all respect to Tudortomnz's statement, I do not think it mattered weather the car had a side mount or not as the bulletin information does not specifically say that BUT I could be wrong on that assumtion...who knows? If the owner desired a rear bumper of this type, the change over was easily made.
