Mixture screws/poor starting
 

Nearly ready to hit the road in my "new" jailbar truck.
Still having problems with starting, it's reluctant to fire with the aircleaner on, bit easier with it removed. Have cleaned the carb,set fuel level etc, everything looks ok in there, it does have one of the cheap rebuild kits but there's nothing obvious amiss
However, the mixture screws are not stock and do not seat very well, screwing them in and out makes a difference but not a lot, runs best about one turn out. Should i look out for some correct screws?

Does it run with the mixture screws all the way in? If so you have most likely got a leak at the power valve.

I got that wrong, it will run with the screws in or out!

If it runs with them all the way in, you have gas getting from somewhere it shouldn't. First port of call is power valve. Leaking cus it's split or leaking from the gasket due to loose or incorrect power valve or gasket.
Pull the lid off the carb, pore gas in the float bowl, if the gas drops after a while, even overnight, it's not sealling for one of the reasons above.

The adjustment needle you show appears to be for a Stromberg not a 94. Suggest you get a good rebuilding kit from Dayton if you have a 94 or Uncle Max if you have a Stromberg

A friend was on holiday in Florida and picked up a rebuild kit from Daytona!
It looks very comprehensive. Has a different type of needle valve assembly, any one used these?
My truck had been running well, starting required special technique, one stab on the throttle then hit the starter and off it went
Lately tho, I've driven maybe a mile and it would stall at a junction then refuse to restart. Plenty of fuel appearing at the throttle spindle and also from the passenger side mixture screw. Towed it home first time it happened as I flattened battery, it restarted easily later with good battery. Happened again and it restarted afte an hour with a push start.
It's like a heat soak issue but when it's happened it really hasn't been that hot, has been much hotter with no problems
Something must have gone wrong with the carb. Have read about fuel pressure being too high, but again I haven't changed anything so seems unlikely
Happy to tear carb down again but would like to know what the issue might be first

Temperature issues are USUALLY ignition condenser or coil. If it runs well when it is cold or just off the choke, suggest you explore the two items above, especially the condenser.

I don't have a spare condenser, best I get one ordered
I did fit the new fangled needle valve assembly from Daytona today and once I got it running, it didn't stop like it did last time I drove it so maybe there was a problem with the original needle valve, I even got it up to 60mph on the way home

If it is not repeating the stalling when the engine is hot (after the Carb rebuild) then the problem was not ignition. A good ignition condenser is a item to have on hand.
