cost of a paint job? I have a 39 deluxe ford sedan. The body and paint are in excellent condition but the paint has several small chips. What should I expect to pay for a quality paint job in the same existing color? No painting in door jams is necessary. Jon L.

Re: cost of a paint job? I would NOT go to Macco.
(At least not the one I used years ago) |

Re: cost of a paint job? Overheard in a motorcycle showroom:
A new rider was getting a helmet to go along with his new bike. The showrrom had a whole wall of helmets in all kinds of styles, colors, and prices. He asked "How much should I spend on a new helmet?" The reponse was "well, if you have a $10 head you should buy a $10 helmet" So in the same vein, how much you spend on your paint job will be a reflection of how much you value your car and what type of quality you desire. There's nothing wrong with doing a Maaco paint job, they are probably done with better materials and techniques than were available 70 years ago. But some folks desire something closer to what the auto makers are currently turning out, and that will run into a few thousand at minimum. |

Re: cost of a paint job? Why not take your car to a auto body shop and have them give you a quote on fixing the chips that you have and what a total paint job would cost, and then go from there.

Re: cost of a paint job? "Quality" means different things to different folks. "Macco" and "quality" within the same sentence is a perfect oxymoron.

Re: cost of a paint job? paint.....this is controversial but i think most paint shops are terrible rip-offs and they always say that well the cost of paint has skyrocketed, etc.. i had a friend take a 55 chevy to a shop and they really screwed him after giving him a reasonable (to him) estimate of 4k...when he went to get it 7800.00. he couldn't pay it and they ended up with the car. another consideration is do you want a show car or a daily driver that you can lean on and b.s. with your friends or not have a heart attack everytime somebody comes near it? i am of the opinion that if it isn't a trailer queen show car and if you want to drive it around and park it in public lots, etc., then get a good enamel paint job and figure on paying around 2k for it. jmho.

Re: cost of a paint job? I recently got a quote to repaint my roadster. Painter wanted $7500 to
disassemble , strip, and paint. |
Re: cost of a paint job? Check out the car dealerships in your area. If business is slow in the auto body dept. they may be willing to paint it for a fair price using good paint.

Re: cost of a paint job? A shop I do side jobs at usually costs about 6-9k for a complete strip/paint including whatever small body work is involved. I do the majority of his patch panels. He just did a 31 Chevy 4 door for around 9k in the original two tone colors. It was a very nice paint job.

Re: cost of a paint job? I had my 1939 Pickup Truck painted for about $7,500. The shop did body work (minimal) but were very receptive to my needs. I have been back to them and asked them for some minor painting (trim pieces I forgot) and it was no charge. Hope this gives a ball park cost.

Re: cost of a paint job? When I was rear ended in my OT car, I was given a quote and a paint shop. I googled and saw many negative reviews. I called my own insurance and got their recommended paint shop and the other insurance also uses them... for their claims. The job was superior to anything I expected and completely invisible.
So, call your insurance company and get their recommendation. Then get an estimate for repair and respray. |
Re: cost of a paint job? Leave the overall paintjob as it is.
A touch-up of a few chips shouldn't run more than a couple of hundred dollars at most. |
Re: cost of a paint job? I agree with Swoop NZ; however, the golden rule is...."go for the very best that you can't afford".....you won't regret it !
