Suggestions on how to clean gas tank? Are there filters in there than need replaced.

Not to be abrasive but do a search. Likely enough material to keep you reading for a long time. Wayne

Yes there can be a penicil filter installed
If it is rusty you can drain it and fill with cleaner like Evapo-rust or remove it cut open and clean
If it is dirty flush with cleaning solvent
