rEMOVAL FRONT PROPLLER SHAFT BEARING SLEEVE Guys, Any tips on the removal and installation of the front propeller shaft roller bearing sleeve and grease seal on my 1935 Ford? Thanks.

Re: rEMOVAL FRONT PROPLLER SHAFT BEARING SLEEVE Yeah - there's a great how to video on youtube. Maybe someone has a link to it - if not I'll try and find it later.
There's a thread on here with a link if you can search for it. Mart. |
Re: rEMOVAL FRONT PROPLLER SHAFT BEARING SLEEVE I followed the advice I received here recently, using a socket that was the correct size to contact the seal but still fit through the hole in the torque tube, I taped it to the end of the drive shaft and drove out the seal and race together. It worked better than I expected. Pay particular attention when installing the new race, I got a little sloppy and had to noodle around to get the divot correctly aligned.

I in advertantly installed my sleeve before the oil slinger. I used a small grinder to reduce the thickness of her sleeve and then carefully used a chisel to cut he thin steel remaining.
After removing the sleeve I used it to make a tool to form the new seal into the cover. The cost of the replacement sleeve was less than buying a puller or driving to a machine shop to have them remove mine...... |

Re: rEMOVAL FRONT PROPLLER SHAFT BEARING SLEEVE That video is great progress in working on a torque tube. I first tried the tool in the dimple. soon found it goes in the hole. Easy Peasy

Re: rEMOVAL FRONT PROPLLER SHAFT BEARING SLEEVE 4 Attachment(s)
I made an aluminum stepped diameter pusher plug that mounts to a shaft. Then I made all thread extensions in various lengths that attach to the shaft. One length is used for putting seals in axel housings. Another length is just slightly longer than a torque tube and is used for driving out seal and bearing sleeve from front of torque tubes. This one pusher plug works great for both applications and does not damage the bearing sleeve during removal. I usually wind up reusing the original TT bearing sleeves because many of the ones you buy new today are junk. A couple pictures of the pusher plug when I was using it to install seals in axel housings. One picture shows the all thread attached.

Re: rEMOVAL FRONT PROPLLER SHAFT BEARING SLEEVE Here in the UK we call the driveshaft a prop shaft (propeller shaft)
