Could someone post pictures of upper tailgate/hinges and how is it attached?

I donno if this will help you much--pics aren't very good. The upper tailgate has a resessed area at the top of the jam to accept the two hinges. I have mine set up with gas shocks for openers.

They are held in by (3) on each side phillips head screws. Lose those, and use flathead hex screws. Use some never seeze on the threads
Remove the trim on the inside. Then use an extension to reach the screws. Use care
removing them, so the phillips head is not stripped. I used a 3/8 drive phillips head.
Might require using a impact driver, the hammer type, not air or electric drive style.
Have two people holding the tailgate, while removing the screws from the inside. This is
a tough job. I tore my original headliner doing this, and thought all was lost. Nick Alexander's upholsterer, saw it and repaired it in an hour. You would never know it
was torn.
