Replacing rear wheel stud
 

Does anybody sell the correct length rear stud for steel drums,
all the ones I see are for cast drums and you need to shorten
the shoulder 1/16". I have read that the swaging tool the vendors
sell in not up to the job, is that true. I was wondering if I could use
something like a wrist pin to do the job.

Years ago I bought the swage tool from Brattons and I swaged a couple studs with it. I had to use a pickel fork to get the tool off the stud.
I also bought the studs from Bratton's and had to turn a little off with my lathe. I turned the excess off at a 45 degree angle, so the the tool only had to push the higher center part towards the outside for the swage. My 20 ton press just barely was up to the job, but it worked.

I bought a supply of studs 35 years ago which are the correct length,you need a 40 ton press to do the job easily,the 20 ton Harbor freight won't work that well

I had my auto machine shop press mine for me. They charged $5 apiece and did a good job. He said the tool I supplied him to press (from the vendor) was not hardened and mushed out under the 30 ton press, he used his hardened tool.

I had one stripped stud. I bought a bag of studs and the tool to do the job from Snyders. I took the studs and tool to a local machine shop and the guy was done in about 10 minutes. He said it took about 26 tons to press it in and everything worked fine. He didn't even charge me. He just asked me to bring the car over some time so he could see it!

All is OK. The stud I thought was bad was ok, the lug nut threads were
stripped out and stuck in the stud threads. I got the stripped threads
from the nut out of the stud and all is good.
