48 coupe- another dumb question

OK, here's my problem.
Bought a new gas tank and a Vintique sending unit. The float is held to the sending unit rod with a shepherds hook on the end. Great, no problem, EXCEPT the hole in the top of the tank for the sender is not big enough to put the sending unit rod with the float in place into the hole.
Obviously, the float goes in un-hooked from the rod, but how do you hold it without dropping it into the tank?
There must be a simple way to do this. There just must be.

Update:
I Called Vintique. They said I have the wrong float. They're sending me one with the holding groove for the hook in the end of the float so it will go in. The float I got originally had the holding groove in the middle.

Problem solved (hopefully).

Re: 48 coupe- another dumb question

Most repro sender floats can be angled thru the large hole in the top of the tank unless the unit is incorrect for the car. This also allows the sender to be raised to allow the bending of the float arm to correct the gauge reading. Be sure the float arm isn't contacting a baffle or other obstruction. We have had to redrill the sender flange holes for some repro senders to gain clearance. Running a ground wire from one of the mounting screws to the chassis is also a good idea.
