But how are the steel cups and felt washers held on the bottom of the King pins? :o

The top and bottom faces on my axle where the King pins go in are smooth.

I will TRY to help. They go between the axel boss and the spindle boss on the bottom. Most difficult to get in. When you get them in, raise the car off the ground with a jack under the spindle axel shaft and make sure there is clearence between the top of the cup and the axel boss. If not a shim goes under the top of the the king pin above the axel boss. I know what I did but not sure I put it in my ansewer.

I have a question related to kingpin installation. Mostly frontends are rebuilt with the frontend out of the car, so the weight is not on the spindles. Most kingpins need to have shims put under the bearings under the kingpin heads, due to years of wear on the top of the axle. The question is: Should the bearing be tight after installing shims (can't turn the bearing) or should it turn some?

I couldn't find any way to tell without the weight on the spindle. Something must have been wrong if the axle was worn, My understanding is that the shims are needed to correct a manufactureing thickness error in the bearing.

Upside down on top of the bottom boss on the spindle? Hope this makes sense.

I am reassembling the front axle on the bench, not the car. My plan is to ensure the clearance between the top bearing and the axle is between 0.008 and 0.010 with the cross bolt in and tightened. Will probably have to do this a couple times.

Some repo cups are too thick, so first verify that they are correct. I put the felt in the cup and slide it in with a thin putty knife to compress the felt slightly and keep it from hanging up on the king pin as it slips in.

That post was for the thin washers under the bearing. This one is for the location of the steel cup and felt washer.

I think I've got my answer from an image posted above.

I don't have the cup washer thickness right here, but you can verify if it easily fits between the kingpin and axle.
