heater conversion in lower hose
 

Asking those who know. Getting ready to put hole in my lower passenger side water hose. It is for the water outlet used for the heater in 1947 ford. Does one use any type of sealer around the metal parts fitting against the rubber hose.

I just made one and used Indian Head shellac lathered on both sides and never a leak. CARQUEST has the same stuff and call it "gasket shellac compound". ccm26891, I am sure Advance, NAPA and the other guys have the same stuff. I use it on my radiator hoses also. To make a clean hole in the hose I turn up a wooden plug to fit the inside of the hose and then use a 5/8 spur bit to drill the hole.

I did not use any sealer on my 47 tonner. I punched the hole, installed the fitting, tightened down the nut and it has never leaked.

Carquest won't have it, but Advanced might...they bought CarQuest recently! :eek: I'm not happy about it either. There appears to be a large variety in what each Advanced store has/knows regarding CarQuest stuff.

I've never used sealer on that heater hose fitting. I put a cut down piece of a wooden 2x4 in the hose, I sharpened a piece of copper tubing on a grinding wheel, placed it on the hose. with the 2x4 inside and gave it a few good whacks with a hammer. It makes a clean hole and you should never have to seal it, just tighten it down.

Fords service bulletin said to dip a sharp knife in water to lub while cutting.
The punch is a better method but make the hole small so the barb has to be forced through the hose. G.M.
