Water pump shaft taper

I bought a new aluminum 2 blade fan from Snyder's in Hershey and installed it on my leakless water pump. The fan soon became loose and the keyway was destroyed. The keyway on the water pump shaft was likewise ruined. I talked to a man named Von at Snyder's about the possibility of a faulty fan. He said that some of the older repro water pumps had the incorrect taper on the shaft and that this may be my problem. Talked to a machinist about the taper and he confirmed the incorrect taper. I ordered a new leakless water pump and fan and installed it. Problem gone. Thanks to Snyder's for their knowledge and direction. John

I thought the fan taper problem was corrected at least 5 years ago. Also, when you use a nut against aluminum, it's best to use a thin steel flat washer under the nut.

Were you using an alternator that needed an extra tight belt?

I have a washer under the fan. The car was restored 10 years ago and never driven. I suspect the water pump was installed at that time. Because the car was never driven, the problem with the water pump was not discovered. John
