Bad Generator

I was removing the fan to replace it when a blade of my 4 blade fan fell on to the Batt. connection of my cutout and cooked it. I t seems to have cooked the generator too, as it now puts out only about .5 of a volt. So what does this sound like, new windings, a new armature, brushes? Yeah I know, put a fuse on the circuit. I've got the parts, just have to find the time!

Re: Bad Generator

The blade hitting the BATT connection would short the circuit from there to the starter switch post, but should have had no effect on the generator or cutout. If it hit the cutout and damaged it in such a way the contacts got bent closed, then the battery current could have cooked the generator.

This is interesting though because when the field doesn't work, the residual magnetism will still let the generator produce 1/2 volt.

Re: Bad Generator

Tom, Thanks for the reply. I was holding something on the right side of the car (Can't recall now what) when the blade hit and I had to go around to the left side to get it off the cut out. I don't walk/run so fast anymore and by the time I got there, it had stopped smoking and I figured the cut out was cooked (it was) but I didn't bank on the generator. I put another cutout on and No Charge! I metered it while it was running and the meter showed .5 of a volt right off the field. So you're saying that the field windings are cooked?

The fields could be cooked, but I still don't see how the generator was hurt by the fan blade shorting the wire on the cutout. Did you try repolarizing the generator. Just junp a wire or pliers across the 2 cutout terminals for 1 second.

Also, will the generator motor ?

Now if the car was running?

UPDATE, I took the Gen. over to a friend's, who was by coincidence having a "motorhead" electrician come by to look at some other stuff and the guy repaired it, I see a new wire coming off the field, but I haven't replaced it yet. So that's the state of affairs as of now. I will fill you all on when I get it back on the car. Thanks again!
