'32 trans mount to torque tube cup bolts
 

Looking to find what I believe are a 1 year only special bolt that has a head on it that locks into place in the groove on the '32 trans mount so it won't turn when you tighten up the nut on the U-Joint cup. I can post a photo of where in goes in the later mounts that are like the '32, but the '32 bolt is longer, probably because it also goes through the K member.

Actually the correct bolt for use on a '32 transmission was the same at least through '34 and it is the "short one". The "long one" is used in later applications where a two-piece u-joint cup is used (the cast version as the stamped version is the same thickness as the one piece cap used from '32 through '34). It does not go through the cross member on a '32.

I welded a piece of 1/4 rod on the head of a bolt and ground it to fit in the mount so it won't turn while tightening

Terry,OH has suggested that I should clarify my post above and I agree. What we are dealing with here is another uncorrected error that occurred between the publication of the last '32 chassis parts catalogue and the '34 version thereof. The latter catalogue lists two versions of the subject bolt, B-5089-B and B-5089-C (7/16-24 x 1.14" and 1.29" in length respectively). That '34 catalogue lists the B-suffix bolt for '33-'34 and the C-suffix bolt for '32. Both of those listings are incorrect. They should read '32-'34 in both listings.

The '32 catalogue had the correct listing, namely B-5089-B for use with one-piece outer universal housing caps and B-5089-C for use with service-only two-piece outer cap (the malleable version, not the stamped version which did not require a longer bolt).

What determines the required length of the bolt was the combined thickness of the B-7085-B main shaft bearing retainer, the B-4513 inner universal joint housing cap, the B-4520 outer universal joint housing cap assembly (which is the two-piece, service-only version as the one-piece version used in production is not listed in the catalogue as it is not serviceable), and the two paper thin B-4515 gaskets. Except for very, very early '32s, all of those parts and their thicknesses are the same well beyond the '34 model year with the only variable being the B-4520 outer cap's thickness, which was greater in its cast version and hence the need for a longer bolt. (The stamped two-piece version is the same thickness as the one-piece cap used in '32-'34 production.)

Perhaps a complicating factor is the existence of an extremely rare '32-only bolt that was used only briefly at the beginning of the model year. It is B-5089-A and it is not listed in either of the catalogues cited above. It was used in concert with the equally rare B-5089-A engine rear support assembly which is shown in the first photo below. It is obvious in this photo that the head of this rare A-suffix bolt would be markedly different from the familiar L-shaped head on the B and C-suffix bolts. The second photo shows the front side of the extremely rare A-suffix support/bearing retainer assembly on the right and the same view of the common B-suffix version of that assembly on the left.

Thanks for the feedback. Is that bolt 7/16-20 SAE NF or a Ford Special at 24 TPI ? Former machinist ? Will check out the tip about Roy N.

SAE NF, typical of those on the many fine threaded fasteners used by Ford during the period.

7/16-20 NF, If you can find a well used rear motor mount from 33-36 and get the bolts.
