Need a couple measurements
 

I recently bought a 1930 CCPU "basket case." The cab is in pretty nice condition, but someone removed the two hood rod brackets near the top of the inside firewall.

Here's what I need. Using an imaginary vertical center line on the inside cowl, how far apart are the brackets? I have heard a total of 12" (hole to hole) which seems a little narrow.

Then, I need to know how far down they are from the inside top of the firewall. How about using a board carefully leveled on the top of the fire wall and measuring down to the top of each bracket?

If you look behind the firewall, you will see two 1.5" x 3" plates that have been welded in. Cannot figure out why they did this. Because the plates are that size, accurate placement of the original holes is almost impossible.

That's why I need the accurate locations.

On mine:

At the firewall, the rods are 12.0" on center. From the top of the firewall, 2 5/8" (2.625), down, to the center of the rods.

I am not certain if those locations are standard or if there is some slight randomization. I would think that, with the adjustability on the radiator end of the rods, that may not have one of the areas of extreme accuracy, however I am not an authority on that information.

To confirm in my feeble mind, the brackets are 12" apart horizontally.?

How did you measure the 2 5/8" dimensions?

if the tank is out of the cab you should be able to see where the rivet holes were & be able to redrill them from the back side. the plates that are there are the original reinforcement plates.

I checked the level across the 2 support rods, jacked the car slightly, to get the level perfectly in the center. I then put the level on the top of the firewall. Insuring the level was perfectly in the center. Then I used a vernier caliper to measure from the base of the level to the center of the rod. Both sides were 2.625.

The plates that were welded in are flush. Not overlaid like a re-enforcement plate would be. Gas welded, kinda shabby.

I'm going to use Brian's measurements and drill new holes. Many thanks to all..

it is possible there were cracks in these areas & they were cut out & butt welded in. there are some small cracks in my firewall which will have to be welded but not bad enough to have to cut out any material. good luck with your project & keep us posted on your progress
