51 victoria brakes doing my first restoration on a 51 victoria.rebuilt master cylinder and all wheel cylinders.new hoses and lines.filled the master cyl. with fluid.pumping the pedal but not moving any fluid. Did I screw up the master cyl. rebuild, or is there some kind of air lock? any help would be appreciated !

Re: 51 victoria brakes Have you started to bleed the air at each wheel cylinder yet? Some of the bleeder nozzles leak if you use a vacuum pump to draw fluid. I use teflon tape on the bleeder threads to help seal for vacuum bleeding.
There could also be a blockage inside the master cylinder to reservoir connective passage. If the piston is not all the way retracted, fluid may not enter the cylinder properly. |
Re: 51 victoria brakes Try opening up the bleeder furthest from the master cylinder while you "prime" the system. Right rear. What a great car to restore. Please post a photo of your 51 Victoria.

Re: 51 victoria brakes thanks for the responses.Ihavent gotten to the bleeding process. The master cylinder has not moved a drop.I must have a blockage or the piston isnt allowing fluid to enter

Re: 51 victoria brakes have the body off the frame now. will post a pic when its further along

Re: 51 victoria brakes I personally think that the '51 Victoria's are the best looking of all the shoeboxes. This in spite of the fact that they were a last minute "put-together" model. Some things just work out well. Good lock with your brakes and your car.

Re: 51 victoria brakes Be sure the master cylinder piston releases all the way. Should be slight play in the push rod.

Re: 51 victoria brakes took the master apart.Got some fluid ahead of the piston.put it back together and it works great.thanks to all

Re: 51 victoria brakes would like anyones opinion on this.this 51 vic is of course 6 v.should I convert to 12 v during the rebuild,or get it going on 6v,and once its up and running make the switch ?I have been thru the motor, rings, valve train, turned the crank new bearings...what do you think

Re: 51 victoria brakes They will run fine with 6 volts. Some people just seem to feel better if they change to 12 volts. Of course with 12 volts you can run lots of modern accessories if you so desire. I like to run 6 volts and use the original generator too, but I'm a grumpy old fart. Your car your choice.

Re: 51 victoria brakes Sounds like it's apart I'd convert it now. I converted my 51 Victoria and 50 merc and still run a generator.
