Gas tank strainer/flame arrestor
 

One of these came with my car (31) and there is none in the tank. It is threaded. I looked down into the tank and the float level rod is right below the opening. The strainer hits the rod when I try to put it in. Your expertise is needed. I don't want to damage anything. The gauge works fine.

Not threaded is 30-31 threaded is 28-29

Late 1931 tanks (indented firewall) are threaded just like the 1928-1929 tanks. Only the 1930 and EARLY 1931 tanks used the tabbed flame arrestors.

If the gas gauge rod hits the flame arrestor, just bend the rod so it no longer touches it.

Steve, My car sold new 6/8/31. The number on block #A4210990 and pink slip original CA. title is #4210990. Would this gas tank with the threads be original? How would you go about bending the rod while it is in the tank? I don't want to mess up anything.

You need to burn enough gas to drop the level below the little window. The suppliers sell a set of tools to take the float assembly out. Get a gas gauge rebuild kit and a new metal float that will replace the cork. You can easily bend the rod. Probably Bert's has these. If not, the floats are made by an old timer out of California.

Is it really necessary? I have to take mine out to fill up anyway because it keeps tripping the pump nozzle off. Also I don't think we need to strain particles out of modern gas like the old timers may have had to.

I'm thinking of eliminating mine.

The screen is not really necessary. Removing it you do lose any protection factor offered by the screen. OBTW, it only works when it is in place and with the gas cap removed for any reason. When you remove the screen to fill using the modern fill nozzles it does nothing while it sits on the running board.

My 29 came without and it took a few years for me to finally find a decent one at Amherst. I use a rag to set it on to keep the gasoline from softening the paint on my truck running boards. A molotof cocktail in the making?

(i.e. your overall hazard level may actually be lower WITHOUT it.)

Still, I like the originality factor.

I read that one use for screen/arrestor was to hold a chamois cloth to filter out water!
