Original Mufflers...

Can anyone provide any information on just how to determine an original Ford Model A Muffler by just looking at it? What key points tells you it is an original and not a reproduction?

Thanks.

Pluck

You've probably seen this, but it might help for those who haven't; http://www.fordgarage.com/pages/mufflerweld.htm

Well, I do believe by viewing Vince's website, I just might have an original Model A muffler...Any other telltale things to look at?

I have a round, cylindrical muffler, with rolled ends, & the pipes, sanded it with 180 grit, sprayed it with "CAST BLAST" & it looks quite nifty. It'll create attention, as an example of some of the re-poed parts of "THE DAY"!

If there are any spot welds showing along the main part of the muffler, it is not an original. The most common repro has embossed letters and numbers showing.

The tailpipe is a dead giveaway once you're familiar. Nobody but Ford and/or their original suppliers ever produced them the same.

Thank you, Marco!! It appears I also have an original!

Guess I will repair those 3 small holes and keep it rather than throw it in the scrap metal pile now.

did they ever settle the argument over the different early 28 muffler?

The more I look at the one I have, the more I am convinced it is an original. Wish it did not have so many dents. Rod

Aries website has these drawings on 1928 muffler that might help.

take a look at the link to www.amuffler.com/content/1928muffler.htm to see what I was talking about. the last I heard there was a discussion that the 1928 version shown never made it into production...

Re: Original Mufflers...

Jim, My understanding is that Dave and Marcy Cella worked to assure that the new mufflers had the early '28 bend in them. The one on A495 is one of the Aires 1928 version mufflers.

Steve, when I bought a totally dissembled A7191 from Mick Isbell it had an original muffler with it. Unfortunately that muffler was rusted in half. The front half and the back half were fine but they were halves. You may want to contact the current owner, Mark Maron, and see if he will take any photos of it for you.

Since I plan to use a SS Aries, anyone know what the value of a restorable original might be worth? Debating whether to sell it or keep it as a wall hanger. Thanks Rod
