Help Needed - Original Accessories Details
 

Good morning all (at least it is here),

I use my 1929 Phaeton (3.3litre ex Australia) Model A in classic car trials here in the UK (have a look at www.vscc.co.uk and the event pictures if you fancy a chuckle).

I am looking to understanding what 'dealer/ford' accessories where available in the 1920's/30's for a Model A. I have been challenged that my luggage trunk, believed to be original, is not a factory option and must be removed. (I run in standard class with a very original spec car). The trunk enables me to put all the tools I need for the long drives to the events and spares for the event safely out of harms way. It also gets the weight over the rear wheels for better traction.

Would anyone have some original brochures/info on Ford dealer trunks that they could share with me? I also feel my trunk is quite a nice original piece so would be interested in proving this (or not) so will try and upload some photos when I get home next weekend.

Ford did not install much in the way of accessories, these were a dealer option. There were some "Ford" authorized accessories but the dealers could sell pretty much anything. There was quite a network of JC Whitney, Western Auto, and such stores selling all kinds of things for the motoring public to buy. I think Ford only install luggage racks on the DeLuxe Roadster when it came out in 1930. If you need dealer information there was a magazine that was not affiliated with Ford but aimed at the Ford dealers. It is called Ford Dealer and Service Field. It was published all through the Model T era, Model A era and up into the V-8s. Lots of information on accessories there.

Seeing how your car is Australian, make a case for it being an Australian production extra.
Ford Australia , I believe, did supply a carrier rack that looks nothing like the usual Ford sanctioned one. They used a steel framed with round cross bars [ chromed?] one on the Sports [sic.] Roadster & Tourer.
Also, how officious is being told to ''remove ''your carrier?? Very British.

I now realise you refer to a trunk, not the carrier itself ; good luck!
