Well I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be if people didn't bid them up. Starting bid was $10, now it's at $121.

Can you tell me which vendors sell a repro Oil Can?
I have the mount and an original Oil Can but worry about the Original Oil Can falling off while driving or getting taken at a Show.

Maybe still EBay but you can buy these Off The Shelf for a lot less then $121. plus shipping.......

Thank you Gents for pointing out that those EBay listings were not including the oil can. Late last night I did a Google search and those are the ones that popped up and I didn't read their details and just saw the pictures. Sorry.

But there are others on EBay that do have the can for a lot less $$$$. So it brings up the point that you may get exactly what you are willing to pay for for their quality for repo or original.

I must admit that I have restored 3 Model A's over the last 30 years and have never purchased a Ford Script Oil Can ever. I do remember going to swap meets and wading through boxes with lots of the Oil cans, Jacks, cranks, etc.... Last Model A swap I attended last week I really did not see any.

I guess I was just stunned about a oil can going for well over a $100
bill......:eek:

They really are not all that uncommon. The larger swap meets like Hershey have lots to choose from and the prices are certainly negotiable !

There are two types of Script Oil Cans.The one for Model T has inside threads for the spout cover. The one for Model A has outside threads for the spout cover. The T Oil Can is not acceptable for Judging,

Actually, there were a number of different styles & suppliers of oil cans... at least 6 or more as I recall. The "Vintage Ford" magazine for the Model T club had an in-depth article on oil can variations a few years ago. It covered all the different sizes and styles of the script, internal vs. external threads, etc.

I understand that oil cans were deleted from the list of standard "A" toolkit items after May '28. Saw that recently on the Model A Ford Club site.

You are correct about the variations on the markings on the oil can.

The thing that is confusing, MAFCA and MARK will accept the T tire pump with the T number on the bottom for the very early 1928 A's; why do they not accept the late T oil can for Judging the very early 1928 A's ? Probable one of those items that the two clubs could not come to an agreement on ?

Be careful about these oil cans. There were several reproductions made two or three decades ago. Usually copper coated. I have a couple of these repros. I also have a coupe of originals. My originals are not copper coated, but plane steel. My originals are of a finer thread on the screw top than are the later repros., which are of a noticably courser thread. I have both a straight spout and a spout with a angled bend at the end. The repros., with their course grain threads, tend to 'pop' off easily. The originals never do.

Also, the mounting bracket that holds the oil can, that is available today, and the one's pictured on the ebay photos, are NOT the correct holder for these early Ford oil cans. The bracket that came with the early cars that had oil cans, had the bracket (totally different construction) mounted on the firewall, where the top and bottom of the cowl were bolted together. The original holders had a spring-loaded base that held the can in place.

Does anyone have a photo of the Original Early Model A Oil Can Bracket???
I would like to fabricate one since they are different than the one I bought off of Ebay.

The reason they are not being made today, is that they would be extremely difficult to produce at a cost-exceptable price. The are somewhat complex as compared to the currently available (but wrong) oil can brackets.
Sorry I don't have a camera (phone or otherwise) to take a photo of the two I have. But I bet MARCO does . . . . he seems to have well documented and photographed just about everything that has to do with the Ford Model A. If no one else does, perhaps he might stumble upon this thread and reply with a photo of the original 1928 holder of the oil can.

IIRC, the repop oil can is one of the fatalities of the "Ford Trademark" issue of the late 1980s.

Someone, possibly MARK had a bunch of them made in China (or pacific rim anyway) and the trademark/licensing thing put the deal on kabosh. A restocking was never repeated.

I own a 29 truck and while never original, it might make a nice "oh look how thoughtful" moment for someone looking under the hood who doesn't know the Judging Standards.

Maybe a plain "Eagle" can will do just as well? Likely Eagle made the originals with script.
