An excellent read! Did the 1946-1948 Merc engines hsve 59 stamped on the bell housing sometimes? I read where they sometimes had 99 stamped on them.

The 99 series blocks were 39-41 with a 3 3/16 bore, and a 2.138 crank. This is where the 29A floating rod came from. And yes All blocks made from 46-48 Ford or Merc had the 59 on the bell housing. This also made the 3 7/8 stroker crank.

Not sure it matters much, but the are not stamped, the 59 is cast into the bell area.

So the Canadian 8AB blocks were all unmodified '49 blocks?

Fred Mills, the author of the piece, is our own 38 coupe here on the Ford Barn. While I am embarrassed to not remember him, Fred tells me that we met at the 2003 Grand National in Dearborn. Thanks Ron, this means I could have a Merc engine sitting in my garage. Too dang cold today to find out! It was zero the last time I looked!

A great article on the Flathead!! In 1938 or 1939 to 1942 Ford used sleeves in the bores. Did they use them in the Mercury engine also? What was the purpose of using sleeves, was it for better wear of the steel sleeve over the cast iron block?

Too many questions to answer right now. I was looking through my computer deleting all the junk I save and ran across this article I saved when first posted. I thought it contained so much information in it, it should be re posted.
But the big thanks belongs to Fred Mills for spending the time and effort to make it in the first place
