I finally got my engine delivered to the rebuilder (J&M) this weekend pre-blizzard. I wanted to again thank everyone who helped by sharing insights and tips on removal and such. I'm going to try to post often as I am hoping to follow the rebuild closely. -Seth

I am enjoying your blog and congrats on getting the motor to the rebuilder.
Have him install a so-called touring cam the engine will be ever so much happier and not labor so much.
Also consider the valve-cover mounted oil filter (from Mike's Affordable). It is full flow and will protect what will become a hefty investment in a rebuild. You would not believe the grit that gets in everywhere without one.
Just for kicks what you are terming a 'gear' on the end of the tranny input shaft is actually called a 'spline'. It sure does look like a gear, tho. The splines align with the splines in the clutch disk. A gear engages another gear in a sideways manner. A spline is a way to accurately attach an item to a shaft. In this case the clutch disc needs to move (slide) on the splines a bit during engagement and disengagement of the clutch while driving. Most of us coat the splines with some never-seize (not gobs else it will get on the clutch facings) to prevent rust build up in the off season, and so the clutch disc can slide freely without binding.
