Engine Test Stands~Lets See Them!

I have a 59 engine with 59AB heads that I traded for several years ago. It has about 14,000 miles since a factory overhaul according to the last owner which I trust. I would like to mount it on a mobile test stand so I can start it occasionally. I have all of the components to do this, even a `41 pickup transmission and a `35 radiator.

I am sure some of you have test stands. Please post pictures. Give me some ideas.

Go to the search tab, advanced, then type in engine test stands, then choose early V8 in discussion forums. There are three threads with test stands and pics.

Here's mine with an 8BA with 8BA water pumps and the Mercury bell housing.

Re: Engine Test Stands~Lets See Them!

I have a couple of different kinds of engines that I wanted to run, so I wanted to make a universal stand. To do this, I bought a cheap engine stand from Harbor Freight, and cannibalized the guts of it to make a universal rear mount. For the front, I did an "analog" of the old Hurst system. (Remember, you would get the specialized front mount for your engine and then buy the proper frame adapters?) The rear mount is mounted rigidly to the stand, while the front mounts can slide back and forth to accommodate different length engines. I have an early Hemi on it now and have an Olds Rocket, and a couple of 8BA's to go. If you're only doing one engine, you obviously don't need to go to the trouble. The adjustable rear mount does seems the the easiest way to go, though. I'm in Florida for the winter, so I can't post pictures, but I'm sure you get the general idea.

Good suggestion Don. I like the looks of the one you built.

The HF heavy duty engine stand can provide most of the materials you need to build one very inexpensively. I have 4 done 5 of those.

But I have also used a 15x7 steel wheel with a 205x70x15 blackwall inflated to ~25 PSI. Strap it to a movers dolly and it becomes portable.

I know your serious Ron, at least I think you are. Doesn't engine torque shift the engine around?

Finally figures out how to post a picture, the radiator hangs from the front posts by welding some legs that stick out, couldn't find a finished pic
.If I leave the transmission on I use a sissor jack to hold up rear
