40 Switch Problem:
 

My switch has got to where it is hard to to turn on.It acts like it is catching on something and I have to keep trying over and over until it will finally go to on position.Key is worn very bad and I now noticed that my steering is not locking when it is off.I believe something is worn badly or broke!Any ideas?

You may be missing the lock collar that slides over the steering column inside the outer column??? Take spray lube like LPS #1 and spray a lot of it into the lock cylinder and through the toggle switch opening. lay some rags or a pan down to catch the run off. Work the key and the switch many times spray again. This should get the dirt out and free up any rust. The steering wheel would have to be removed to see if the lock collar is in place. If not the outer column has to come off to install one. There are other possibilities as to why it does not lock. The column will only lock in one position for every turn of the steering wheel.

A worn key will do what you are describing. Yes, it can be as simple as that.
If you do not have a "fresh one" to copy, then I'd suggest getting one cut from the cylinder code.
At this moment I suggest you take Terry's advice and lubricate the mechanism very well. That'll help for certain.

I lubricated it real good and seems to work better and the steering is locking again.I still think the key is completely worn out?I guess the cylinder has to be out to get a number off of it.I do see HURD on the front?

Good progress! As I'd suspected, the key is the major issue. pretty common on these old cars.
Yep, the lock will have to come out unless the door lock is the same key. Usually the door lock is much easier to remove.

Door is keyed the same.Set screw in door is froze of course!

Here is an update on my switch problem which is solved thanks to FlatHeadCoupe.I emailed him 2 good photos of my worn out key and he sent me two new cut replacements that work excellent.Also he supplied the code to keep if ever needed again.Thanks again John for your help.
