oil bath air filter i am about to restore my oil bath air filter and plan on using the molasses bath method to remove the rust.knowing that this method will not remove old oil or grease does anyone know of a degreaser i could use to soak and clean the filter before before doing the molasses bath? also have oil stains on concrete driveway, what can i use for that.

Re: oil bath air filter Totally immerse your parts in Simple Green, full strength. Get a big bucket from home depot etc. put the part in it and cover the part with Simple Green, leave it a day or more, rinse with water and if it is still greasy drop it in again. Works great.
I have never tried molasses so I can't speak to that but i have used Evap-O-Rust. Applied in the same manner as I prescribed for the the Simple Green it will do just as they claim. |
Re: oil bath air filter Start with the hotest water on the first soaking. Will cut the heavy grime a lot quicker.

Re: oil bath air filter 29,thank you,i have some walmart super clean hangen around here,do you suppose it will work as well, should i dilute with water or full strainght? thank's gmc,are you referring to the molasses bath or both and what would be the ratio? thank's again to you both..

Re: oil bath air filter See if you can find a large crockpot or electric roaster at a thrift store for a few bucks. Pretty much any degreaser, cut with water, will work wonders when used with heat. I've a $2 crockpot that has cooked many carburetors and other grimy parts.

Re: oil bath air filter Tide and hot water will clean off the better part of the grease and grime.

Re: oil bath air filter muriatic acid works great on concrete, make sure to wear your rubber gloves and glasses. You can dilute if you like. You can use a broom or a long handles scrub brush, rinse with garden hose when done.

For the grease on the driveway just wet it then spray simple green full strength wait a few minutes, if the concrete has a "grain" like it was broom finished get a very stiff bristled brush (not a wire brush) and brush with the grain, wait some more, rinse. Repeat as necessary. This stuff is not too harsh on your skin but I would wear eye protection, don't think it will play well in your eyes. |

Re: oil bath air filter I know not everyone has a solvent tank, but if it were me, I'd buy a gallon of solvent and a stiff bristled brush and use a bit of elbow grease to clean it out..., the use a piece of window screen inside a funnel and pour it back into the can...toss the screen, keep reusing the solvent.
I hate having to wait for things i want clean of grease/oil packed dirt, etc. |
Re: oil bath air filter Many oil bath aircleaners have a chamber inside for sound deadning ---the chamber doesn't get liquid in it normally, not easy to drain out, anything like acid, or media blasting won't come out, if it is rusty inside there most likely the only way to get the rust out---and whatever is used to clean out the rust, and the debris from cleaning the rust will only come out by taking the aircleaner apart at the seams, into componet parts, personally if my oilbath aircleaner is internally rusty I would look for a different one.
If only the external surfaces need cleaned I would use wirebrush, sandpaper, solvent, perhaps gasoline---if the aircleaner suffered from neglect(too low of oil level) dip clean the mesh with solvent, or gasoline |
Re: oil bath air filter jiw1,
What vehicle is this air cleaner fit? As for cleaning mine, I use the aerosol brake cleaner and it spiffys up right quick. I avoid the cleaner that is "green" and good for the environment. Use the real stuff, OUTDOORS, in the fresh air and still wear eye and mouth protection. |

Re: oil bath air filter good morning guys, thank's for all the suggestions.i like the crock pot idea.will be going out today to find one. thirt4 sorry i did not mention year or model. i am working on two.one is from my 1950 f5 that has a mercury tea pot carb and the other is a 50-53 mercury with a 90* elbow moving the oil bath off to the passenger side of carb.i see what you mean about the sound chamber.there is a threaded hole in both unites for a support bracket to intake manifold which will drain liquid from the chamber.both unites have HH stamped in on the bottom.anybody know.thanks to all for welcomed advice, john
