Is there a "correct" side for side mount? Other than the rear, just curious if there was a particular side the spare was mounted if only one came on the car. Our budd cab has it on the passenger side fender. The reason I ask is that I have a period trunk to fit the rear of the s/w but that means I will have to do one or two side mounts. I have the fenders for both so I could do both sides but I'm not sure I want to.

Re: Is there a "correct" side for side mount? most of them that came out with a side mounts, they were on the left side, some vehicles were special ordered with the right side mount. like Ma Bell there pick ups had a right side mount because the ladder went on the left side.

Re: Is there a "correct" side for side mount? My 31 S/W has only the right side mount.

Re: Is there a "correct" side for side mount? My old 29 CCPU before it became a huckster, had it on the left side.

Re: Is there a "correct" side for side mount? All Model A's that came standard with a side mounted spare had it on the left (drivers side). The right side was special order.
The only models I've ever seen with factory installed right (passenger) side ONLY spares were 1930-31 Town Sedans (155-C, 155-D, and 160-B). All four of these that I've seen also had an original accessory luggage rack and trunk on the rear. Obviously there could be and certainly were other models where folks special ordered a right side only spare from the factory but these are the only ones I've seen and verified as factory. |
Re: Is there a "correct" side for side mount? FWIW: My Briggs August 1930 Town Sedan came with a fender side mounted spare on the passenger side & a trunk on rear.

Re: Is there a "correct" side for side mount? It seems to me that it would make sense to mount the spare on the passenger side to balance off the weight of the driver when there is only one person in the car. Probably doesn't make much difference. Ed

Re: Is there a "correct" side for side mount? I always assumed that the decision was based on where it would be least in the way. The majority of Model A tinkering is done on the passenger side, hence, I would want the spare on the driver side.

Re: Is there a "correct" side for side mount? The outside. :p

Re: Is there a "correct" side for side mount? I figured they were all standard on the driver's side and then later on in the 30's you would see vehicles with the spare on the passenger side (probably for safety reasons and traffic maybe?)
Anyone know if the right hand drive versions also had driver's side as the default location for side mounted spare? |

Re: Is there a "correct" side for side mount? I used to have a girl friend who balanced off the load of the left side spare, but she became difficult so I dropped her off and I got a dog instead...worked out just fine...
