1929 cowl band
 

Hello, I have a 1929 Murray fordor that I am trying to remove the cowl band does anybody know how it comes off? Thanks Joe

Joe -

I see from your post that this is your initial foray into this section - welcome! As to your question, the '29 cowl band is brass and its removal and installation is unique to only a very few '29 models. My recommendation is to start at either end and slowly work the band off using a putty knife or other broad blade, working back and forth from side to side and then up. Once the process is started it becomes easier. The band snaps on over a steel track. However, because the band is brass, be very careful not to bend or break the band as replacements are quite difficult to find given their overall rarity. Good luck.

if my memory is good, there is a bolt at the bottom of the band that has to be removed first, one on each side

And expensive!! And expensive to have repaired!! I would not try to remove another one, after trying my first one. I would find a way to leave it alone.

Thanks everyone for the advice, I am going to leave it alone and tape it off. My wife wants to leave it in the condition that it is in and show the wonderful years of ageing even with new paint. Thanks again Joe

Wise decision! If leaving it on is at all an option, do so.

I just finished putting mine back on...to take it off I used a thin blade wide screwdriver and very carefully pried it off..it does work...to put it back on a word of caution.. don't paint cowl where band goes..as it will make it all most impossible to get back on...I installed it with a rubber hammer starting at one end ( be sure it is centered) and with lots of swear words it does snap back on and no dents or dings...new chrome looks beautiful and was worth effort...good luck

We had to do over a 29 Murray town sedan that was missing the cowl trim, only thing there was the base piece which would have been ugly just painted over. I ordered a brass molding from Universal Tire that was a good match for the original trim and after forming in place with a rubber hammer we sent it out for nickel plating and installed it back on, came out very nice. A little pricey when finished but worth it as the original is not being reproduced.

AS they say gently is the wisest. I've done a couple and they can be done. The other factor is getting them replated. Make sure your plater understands how fragile these are. We actually made a plywood jig to hold it during the plating process. Just to give it some support during the buffing etc.
