They used a split rivets on the radiator shell. The cowl used hooks and I think three screws. I would try and find some split rivets. I think the venders sell them. This is what the 30-31 have.

I agree with the posters above - use split rivets. There is a model T split rivet tool that I bought that correctly set the rivets. It worked very well.

Hey Fred,
If working with avatar coupe, i.e.- '30/'31 the radiator shell 'lacing' is held on with four flathead screws, in addition to the split rivits.
Glue is a joke right, I get it :D

Ditto on Mitch advice on the tool. I got one, it's a must.. Also, the original rivets were tough as a coffin nail.. I grabbed some cheap Large needle nose plies at Harbor Fright made the job easy..

my avatar is my 1930 town sedan with the doors off as at that time
I was installing head liner and new roof top.

glue was not a joke , but just an option I was considering.

I will get proper rivets as most suggest.

thankyou

This is probably common knowledge, but I always use an awl to poke the holes for the rivets. I do the same for the 3 cowl screws and 4 clip rivets.

On my 1928 Tudor, the lacing on the cowl is held on by two lengths of wire held by four flat head screws. The radiator shell lacing is held by split rivets.

I think he is talking about the shell to radiator screws that go under the lacing.

Very sound advice as usual and as above please don't use glue.

But that is not what "hardtimes" said. And, even those are not "flathead" screws, which are intended to go into a tapered hole.

"Ford Model A Hardware" book, published by MARC & MAFCA shows those as "Special Flat Head Slotted Bolt, part number A20401, No.12-24 USF x 1/2" long". The closest thing that is being manufactured today is a "pan-head screw". The surface that goes against the metal is flat, not tapered.

These special bolts that attach the radiator shell to the radiator do not go through the lacing. The lacing goes over the heads of the bolts.

He doesn't have the restoration manual or the hardware book. To the average guy they are flat head screws and you have to admit they do look like the screw should go through the lacing. I offered to buy from him the Restoration guidelines and judging manual if he felt it was not worth the money, but have not heard back.
