Vacuum wiper woes

I was planning on updating my wipers to electric on my 40 pickup. When I called the company they told me I needed to enlarge the holes from 5/16 to 5/8, the truck is already painted ugh. So I am rethinking and may stay with the vacuum tricos. The problem is I called a large rebuilder and he tells me the rebuild kits are no longer available ????????? Anyone know a source for a couple of rebuild kits?

Try the Wiperman aka Ficken Wiper Service
About a hundred for a complete rebuild, good man to do business with.

It may be that the felt paddles in the motor have dried out. Try squirting some oil down the vacuum supply hose and then work the wipers back and forth by hand to suck it in. Often that is all it takes to get them working again.

JonC, I use Kent Jaquith to rebuild my vacuum wipers. He's a long time V-8er and has been in the wiper repair business for years. I had him rebuild the wiper for my 41 pickup and my 40 coupe. Both work excellent. Kent can be reached at ph#541-923-4319 or his cell # 541-350-7426. Kent lives on Oregon.
As an alternative look at the electric wiper that is put out by Pacific Western Design in Washington. www.pacificwesterndesign.com. They have the Mighty Wiper which might work for you.
Just for info the pot metal housings for the pickup wipers were prone to pitting inside. Some can be saved and some cannot be repaired.

Re: Vacuum wiper woes

I have used Air Tool oil in my 40 wiper motor, and it works well. I also use an electric vacume pump to run the wipers. No problems when passing or going up a hill in the rain. The wipers just keep on working. My 40 is 12 volt, with a SBC for an engine. The vacume pump is a Godman pump, and I mounted it under the right front fender, just behind the fender brace. It has worked great for 25 years now. I do oil the motor if I notice it having troubles working at all. I take the motor off the car and oil it on the bench.

I'll second TJ's recomendation for Kent Jaquith. Kent is a solid V8er, a competent wiper rebuilder, and beyond anything else, an honest man.

Thanks guys I called the wiperman first and he told me he can no longer get the parts to rebuild my wipers. He is looking into other sources but as yet no luck, I will try Kent. Thanks
